This is me in my wedding dress in 1982. My mother made the dress for me. The dress took so much work and Mom actually had to make two dresses; an entire dress in lace plus a taffeta dress that was worn underneath the lace. I didn't want to sell the dress or give it away after my divorce because my mom made it. So, after some thought, I decided to make some lace curtains for my dining room.
Sorry the picture is so dark, but you get a halfway decent view of the curtains. It bothered me to undo the work Mom had done. Still, I figured curtains were a nicer way to pay tribute to my mom's handiwork than leaving the dress packed away in a plastic bag. Plus, it really made my friends laugh when they admired my curtains and I told them the story behind the beautiful lace. It made me laugh, too, and it felt good to laugh.

Now that's funny!
I think you did exactly the right thing by turning the dress into curtains.
The photo honours your mother's handiwork, the curtains make her part of your everyday life.
Unless my math is wrong, you guys decided fairly early that it wasn't going to work, that's a good thing. It's those who put long years of effort and resources in before the split who have my condolences.
That's awesome. Seriously awesome. It's nice that you were able to keep your mom's work around your house and in your life, and hilarious that your wedding dress has ended up as window dressing.
It's great that you can separate your ex from your mom in that way, since the dress was clearly a labor of love for her, and you kept that in your heart even after letting your marriage go.
Beautiful wedding picture - you make a lovely bride :)
I love that you made curtains out of your wedding dress! I've been divorced for 5 years and my dress (also made by my mother) is still in that silly box in the attic. When I moved a couple of years ago, my stepdad was giving me a hard time about keeping it - it couldn't possibly still fit me. I asked him if he could wear anything that HE wore when he was 19. He said, "No, but I didn't keep it!"
My, aren't you clever....and funny ;)
I've been thinking about going along with the crowd and posting a wedding photo myself. Maybe one day this week I'll get around to it....
That is such a great idea! I have my mother's first wedding dress which was a black sari with silver thread (she's not from India), it has a big rip in it so I have been considering making it into pillow shams or something but have yet to do it. Perhaps you've given me the inspiration I need!
I think it's pretty cool that your mom made your dress.
That is a "Scarlett O'Hara" in reverse! Instead of a "Gone With the Wind" moment it was a "Songbirds New View".
yea... I was thinking how you took a dress that was associated with sadness..... and now the light shines through it..
I liked Karmyn's Scarlet O'hara role reversal thoughts
I was married for a very short time to Karmyn's dad... divorced then remarried. So all was not easy.

The curtains are gorgeous!
Birddog and I eloped and I wore pink overalls so I would've had quite the time trying to make curtains out of them! ! !
Oh songbird that is a beautiful story and what a tribute to your mother for all that work. Very well done!!!!
Thankyou for sharing that.
I just have to say, awww. That is so awesome! You are one creative chick! I wouldn't have thought of that.
I won't be posting a wedding photo because I don't have any. And I think I like it like that.
