A Room With A View
I begin the school day at the high school building. The choir/drama room is at one end of the building and has no windows. The walls are covered with a carpet-like material that is supposed to absorb sound. I leave this building at 9:00AM and drive across town to the middle school. Yes, I sometimes feel as though I am in a padded cell with 50 to 70 students! I leave the middle school around 10:00AM and drive back across town to the elementary school. The music room is in the far corner of the building. There is only one "padded" wall because I only share one wall with an adjoining classroom. Most important to my sanity, there is a window. Aaaaahhhhhhhh.........
This is the view from my elementary classroom. I have actually seen deer grazing in the shade of the pines and bunnies and squirrels are common sights. The cares and frustrations of the day melt away when I take a moment to gaze at my view. Maybe I should enlarge this picture to poster size and hot glue it to the padded walls of my other rooms.

when I was in high school and was lucky enough to sit near a window, I don't know how many times I'd just stare outside, lost in my own world.
What??? Absorb the sound of your lovely children's beautiful voices??? Let their voices ring and be heard for miles around!!
At least on rainy days you can't see the "gloom" out there.

The highschool window comment made me think of my freshman algebra class. There was a senior guy in my class (at the time didn't mean diddly to me that he was in a 9th grade math class) well, anyway, I looked at him all the time. Sigh. He was so pretty. (:
I think your idea of making that picture poster sized and putting in your padded room is a wonderful idea. What a great view, especially with the wildlife adding to the beauty.
Did you recently get a digital camera, and not tell me?

When I was in middle school the band/choir room was in the basement - there were windows up high. . .
I am trying to remember if we had windows in the high school band/choir room. . .I can't remember - if they were they were up high too. . .The room was behind the auditorium and away from all the other classrooms. . .
What a way to end the day with a view like that. . .I would blow the pic up to poster size! It's so relaxing!
I've been thinking a lot about art in children's education. Mostly because that's pretty much all my nieces do in pre-school. But I think it's so neat that we develop kids' minds by exposing them to arts like painting, drawing, singing...
Am I romanticizing it?
I just think that people who bring art into the world, and especially into our schools, provide a really important service.

Ahhhh.....Nice view! I remember how happy I was when I moved from my first office (with a great view of a parking lot) to an office that faced a beautiful garden. Bliss.
I'm just glad you don't have to spend more time in the first two rooms.
Karmyn--I know what you mean. The padded walls are to "protect" other classrooms from the sound produced by choir and band, but little thought was given to the fact that choirs especially need a resonant, acoustically "live" room to sing in.
Pamela--Yes!!! I am blessed to be making music all day long with my students. It is totally wonderful!
Tigger--No, I did not get a digital camera. The minute I get one I will report the purchase to you...ha, ha!! I had four shots left on the roll of film that I took choir officer pictures on so I finished the roll at HHES.
Ellecharlie---I don't think you are romanticizing at all. And very few of my students are actually tone deaf. Thank goodness!! Thank you for the compliment, too!
WT--We work so hard in HS and JH choir that I really don't miss a window too much. If I had to stay in those rooms all day it would be another story! I am glad I can "escape" to my elementary classroom, too.
I LOVE the view! Make those posters! If you can't have windows you can make your own!
I was thinking of getting a window frame from an old house or something, and painting a scene on the panes of glass; or, kind of like an aquarium, hang a poster behind it to simulate a view of the great outdoors. Yeah...you could change it with the seasons :).
Padded cells and students...some days that's a whole lotta crazy going on!
